Spring Resistance

Spring resistance is the system of adjustable springs on Pilates machines (reformer, Megaformer, xformer) that provides scalable load for exercises by adding or removing springs to change tension.

What is Spring Resistance?

Spring resistance is the core loading mechanism on Pilates machines including the reformer, Megaformer, and xformer. Springs of varying tension (typically color-coded by weight) are attached to or removed from the carriage to increase or decrease resistance. Unlike free weights, springs provide variable resistance throughout the range of motion — the spring is lightest when compressed or extended and heaviest at full stretch. This variable tension creates continuous muscle engagement and is a key reason spring-based training is effective for both rehabilitation and high-intensity fitness. Spring configurations are typically expressed as a sequence (e.g., "2 red, 1 blue") and vary by exercise, machine, and individual strength level.

Key points

  • Adjustable springs provide scalable resistance on Pilates machines
  • Springs are color-coded by tension level
  • Variable resistance throughout range of motion
  • Configurations expressed as sequences (e.g., "2 red, 1 blue")
  • Effective for both rehabilitation and high-intensity training

Frequently asked questions

How does spring resistance work?

Springs attach to the carriage of a Pilates machine and provide tension that resists the carriage movement. Adding springs increases resistance; removing springs decreases it. The resistance varies throughout the range of motion — lightest at the start and end of the movement, heaviest at full extension.

What spring settings should I use for beginners?

Beginners typically start with lighter spring settings to focus on form, alignment, and core engagement before progressing to heavier resistance. Exact settings depend on the machine, exercise, and individual. Instructors adjust springs per student during class.
